Kindle vs Audible

Kindle and Audible are both part of Amazon, but buying the ebook does not normally include the audiobook. Separate purchases, subscription access and reading-position sync are different things.

How they actually relate

Three facts that clear up most of the confusion.

An ebook purchase is not an audio bundle

Check the offer for your particular book before paying for audio. Selected Kindle Unlimited titles include narration while borrowed; that is subscription access, not an audiobook included with every ebook purchase.

Position sync is not a purchase discount

Read & Listen, formerly Whispersync for Voice, syncs your place between compatible ebook and audiobook editions. Both versions must be in your libraries. An Add Narration discount is a separate purchase offer.

Check the exact edition and narrator

Not every ebook has a matching audiobook. Audible also carries clearly labelled virtual-voice titles, so an Audible edition does not always mean a human performance. Check its language, narrator and sample.

Is Kindle the same as Audible?

No. Kindle covers reading devices, apps and ebooks; Audible is an audio service. Using the same Amazon account does not make the two formats interchangeable or automatically include both with a purchase.

For compatible editions, Read & Listen carries your position between reading and listening. That feature is separate from any offer to buy the matching audio at a lower price. Check access to both versions before relying on it.

Subscription borrowing is different from buying. Kindle Unlimited includes audio for selected titles, identified by a headphone icon. Do not assume that every book in the subscription has audio or that borrowing grants permanent ownership.

A missing audio listing is not proof that no recording exists anywhere. Check the title, edition and language. Nor is every Audible title human-narrated: Amazon also distributes labelled virtual-voice audiobooks. Listen to the sample to judge the narration you will actually receive.

Text-to-speech is another route, not an Audible file conversion. Amazon’s Assistive Reader uses device voices and requires Enhanced Typesetting plus a supported text-to-speech language. Supported Kindle apps include iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and Fire tablets; eligible borrowed and Family Library books can work too. Check Amazon’s current instructions for your device.

Kindle and Audible questions

The specifics people get wrong.

Is Kindle the same as Audible?

No. Kindle includes the ebook-reading devices and apps; Audible provides audio. They share Amazon account connections, but ebook access does not automatically grant audio access. Read & Listen links compatible versions for position syncing; it is not a free-audiobook entitlement.

If I own the Kindle book, do I get the audiobook free?

Not normally from the ebook purchase alone. An Add Narration offer may discount the matching audiobook. Separately, selected Kindle Unlimited titles include audio during the borrow; look for the headphone icon and check that title’s offer. This does not include every Audible book.

How do I turn a Kindle book into an audiobook?

For playback without buying a recorded edition, check Amazon’s Assistive Reader instructions. Eligible books need Enhanced Typesetting and a language supported by the device’s speech engine. This reads text aloud; it does not create an Audible edition or an exported audiobook file.

Why does my book have no Audible version?

The listing alone does not establish why. Check the title, language and edition, then ask the publisher if needed. If no matching audio is available, a compatible text-to-speech reader may help. Amazon’s virtual-voice audiobooks also show why the lack of a human recording does not necessarily mean there is no audio edition.

Is text-to-speech as good as a narrated audiobook?

It depends on the book and your preference. A performed audiobook may offer character voices and interpretation; text-to-speech offers another way to access supported text. Compare an actual sample instead of assuming one is always better or the only possible way to listen.

★★★★★
“This is 1 of the best TTS and its smooth. If this is truly free i'll keep this 100%. Every other TTS says its free but has a secret. They interrupt or they just say better ai voices pay. But i like this voice. I've tried loads and this is 1 of the best ones that actually says free.”

“Works perfectly on vivaldi. One suggestion though. I wish it had a play button appear next to a paragraph when we hover over it. Just like in the case of speechify.”
Loic COBBINA · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
“Extremely user friendly short keys. Placed forward backward and speed up down as Natural as it could be. Voices are great and smooth. I would recommend it over many hyped products.”

“At the very least it's better than many paid TTS models. Still not as good as ElevenReader or LAP, but maybe the best free model for TTS.”

“So glad I can finally switch voices! The default was fine but I found one I actually enjoy listening to for hours. Small thing, huge difference.”
patrick chiang · Chrome Web Store

“ChatGPT's long answers are finally listenable. Let it generate while I listen — doubles my productivity. Love the inline button next to each response.”
young D · Chrome Web Store
★★★★★
“I tried using this add-on to listen to an ebook on the O'Reilly learning platform, and it works smoothly. However, it always restarts from the first paragraph whenever I scroll or select a different paragraph. Please consider adding a bookmark or checkpoint feature so users can mark where the reading should begin.”

Why This Exists

I built CastReader because I owned hundreds of Kindle books and couldn't listen to them on my morning runs without buying separate Audible copies. The technical problem — Amazon's Cloud Reader font encryption — turned out to be solvable with OCR. The product problem — making it actually pleasant across phones, desktops, and 9 supported languages — took two years of iteration. We're a small team. I answer every Chrome Web Store review personally (see testimonials above — including the 3-star and 1-star ones). If something's broken or missing, email support@castreader.ai.
