For a long web novel, begin with one chapter rather than an unattended queue. Open prose you can access in desktop Chrome or Edge, choose an available reading voice, and check that the first two paragraphs and highlighted passage match the story. Pause and resume once before continuing.
We build CastReader, which combines speech, passage highlighting, and scrolling on supported webpages. This is a guide to organizing that reading workflow, not a claim that every novel platform works or that audio makes an all-night reading session healthy. Take breaks when you need them.
The setup
Use the installation links on the fanfiction setup page. Open a chapter whose prose is visible to you, then:
- Open the reader. Use the toolbar icon or the control in your installed version. Choose a voice available to your account and check the remaining allowance. Cloud AI reading sends extracted text for speech generation.
- Compare the opening paragraphs. Confirm that narration starts in the prose and leaves navigation, ads, and recommendations out. Stop if text is missing or repeated.
- Check passage following. Keep the tab visible and compare the highlighted passage with the narration. If paragraph selection is available, try returning to an earlier extracted paragraph. Highlight precision depends on the page and language.
Character names and unfamiliar terms are a practical reason to keep the text in view while listening. A visible highlight alone does not establish that narration is correct; compare both during the short check.
This setup is for a desktop extension. Use the current download options for phone workflows and follow the instructions for that app or browser. Do not assume the desktop procedure works on a phone or continues with the screen locked.
Plan the session one chapter at a time
Choose a usable speed. Start with an enabled setting you can follow. Faster settings may require Pro; the voice picker and account controls are authoritative. There is no single speed or completion time that works for every voice, language, or chapter.
Move within the loaded chapter. On supported extracted text, paragraph selection lets you return to a passage. Check that playback moves to the intended location. This does not establish reliable reading order on an untested layout.
Keep a return point. Save the chapter URL and a non-sensitive location note before stopping. Reopen the chapter and locate the passage yourself when you return. Do not treat this guide as a promise of automatic resume after several days or synchronized progress across devices.
Change chapters deliberately. Stop playback, open the next chapter, wait until the prose is visible, and start again. The Wattpad next-part instructions requires manual next-part reading. The AO3 guide separates loaded Entire Work text from chapter navigation. Neither is a guarantee of uninterrupted playback across a long novel.
Before a longer session, check your reading allowance and the selected voice. A free installation does not mean unlimited or anonymous cloud AI reading. If one chapter fails extraction, resolve that failure before trying more chapters.
When you want an explanation
Read & Explain is a separate AI workflow that can help you examine a passage. Check its account requirements and supported source before using it. An explanation can omit details or be mistaken; it is not the author's interpretation, a guaranteed two-minute summary, or evidence that the whole novel has been analyzed.
If you only need ordinary read-aloud, the reading workflow overview helps you choose the route for your content. An explanation is not required to listen to a chapter.
Limits to check before a long read
Visible text is necessary for this workflow, but it does not guarantee successful extraction. Royal Road, translated-novel sites, and Qidian can have different layouts and access conditions. CastReader does not grant access to locked chapters. A successful test on one site does not validate another.
If the platform offers an audiobook or another audio option for your title, check that route too. On-page narration and a recorded performance are different experiences; this guide makes no voice-quality ranking.
For missing prose, extra interface text, or a misplaced highlight, stop and note the browser, extension version, reading view, voice, and failed step. For Wattpad, follow the linked tutorial’s troubleshooting steps. The AO3 tutorial includes a short report template. This article adds no new whole-novel or mobile test result.
Use material you are allowed to access. Check permission separately before publishing excerpts, screenshots, or generated audio from another person's work.
