Want to listen to a Wattpad story? First check whether your current story has an audio control. If it does, try that option. If it does not, you can try a text-to-speech extension in desktop Chrome or Edge on a story part you can already open and read. With CastReader, start with the current part and open each next part manually.
Want to add audio to a story you wrote? That is a different task. A reading extension plays text for you; it does not add a native audio button to your Wattpad story. Jump to the author answer.
We make CastReader. This guide explains its desktop reading workflow and where its limits matter. For installation and download options, use the Listen to Wattpad setup page.
Does Wattpad have text to speech for every story?
No. Wattpad's own text-to-speech is available on selected stories. Its official text-to-speech help page, checked on September 29, 2026, describes a beta feature added to thousands of English stories. That does not make it available on every story or in every language. Check the audio controls on the story you want to hear; a tutorial showing a button on another story does not establish that it is available on yours.
Choose the route that fits what you want to do:
- Use audio already offered on the story: start with that story's own audio control, if available.
- Hear visible story text in your desktop browser: try the CastReader steps below. The text must already be accessible to you, and reading results can vary with the page layout.
- Add narration for your own readers: check Wattpad's current author options. Installing CastReader does not enable native audio for other readers.
How to listen to Wattpad stories in Chrome or Edge
These steps are for the desktop browser extension. Open one story part before starting a long listening session.
Step 1 — Install and open CastReader. Follow the Chrome or Edge installation link on the Wattpad setup page, then open the extension from your browser toolbar.
Step 2 — Open the part you want to hear. Complete Wattpad's normal sign-in or access steps and wait for the story text to load. A story's contents page is different from the page containing the part itself.
Step 3 — Choose a voice and start playback. Use the voices available in your picker. Check the account and allowance shown for your chosen voice; free installation does not mean unlimited AI speech.
Step 4 — Follow the opening paragraphs. Make sure narration matches the story rather than navigation, ads, or recommendations. Use pause and resume when you need a break. If the reader includes unrelated text or misses prose, use the troubleshooting steps below.
Step 5 — Continue to the next part manually. Stop playback, open the next part on Wattpad, wait for its text to load, and start again. This workflow does not provide an automatic whole-story queue.
Save the part URL and a short location note before closing the tab. Do not rely on automatic bookmarks or progress syncing between devices for this workflow.
On a phone? The desktop extension instructions above do not describe the Wattpad mobile app. Check the audio controls available in that app first. CastReader's site also lists its download options, but a mobile download alone does not establish support for a particular Wattpad story.
Why is Wattpad text to speech not working?
Start with the symptom you can see:
- There is no audio button on the story. Wattpad's native TTS is limited to selected stories, so a missing button does not by itself mean your device is broken. Installing an extension will not add Wattpad's own audio button; the extension has its own reading control.
- The extension cannot find the story text. Open the actual story part, finish any required sign-in, and wait for the prose to load before trying again. Locked parts remain locked.
- It reads menus or skips paragraphs. Stop playback and let the page finish loading, then retry the current part. If it still reads the wrong material, that layout may not work with the reader. Image-only content is outside this text-reading workflow.
- The selected voice will not start. Check the picker for sign-in, voice availability, and remaining allowance. Choose an available voice before retrying.
- Playback stops at the end of a part. Open the next part yourself and start playback again. Automatic next-part playback is not part of this Wattpad workflow.
If the issue continues, contact CastReader support with your browser and extension versions and a short description of the symptom. You do not need to send private story text or account details.
Can you add text to speech to your own Wattpad story?
You cannot enable Wattpad's native TTS just by adding a tag. The official TTS help page says that #texttospeech is reserved for stories where Wattpad has enabled the feature, and that Wattpadders cannot add it themselves. Its current guidance does not provide a self-service activation method for authors.
CastReader does not publish narration or add a native Wattpad audio button. It lets you try listening to accessible text in your own browser; it does not turn that playback into an audio option for everyone reading your story.
Treat older advice about tags or enrollment forms cautiously: it may describe a previous version of Wattpad's audio program. This guide does not promise that a tag, subscription, or browser extension will activate native audio for your story.
Personal playback also does not create an MP3 audiobook export in this workflow. If you plan to publish a recording of someone else's writing, get the appropriate permission separately.
Is listening with CastReader free?
The extension is free to install. Voice and account requirements depend on the option you select: check the installed voice picker and current allowance before starting. CastReader AI requires an account and has plan limits. Cloud voices send reading text for speech generation, so choose them only when appropriate for the material.
CastReader does not unlock paid or unavailable Wattpad parts and is not an official Wattpad product. Start with a part you can already read, choose an available voice, and continue manually between parts.
