To listen to fanfiction with a reading extension, open a chapter you can access in desktop Chrome or Edge, choose an available voice, and compare the first two spoken paragraphs with the visible story. Check pause, resume, and the highlighted passage before continuing. Start with one chapter; seeing text on a page does not guarantee that a reader can extract it correctly.
We build CastReader. Its on-page reading workflow combines speech, passage highlighting, and scrolling on supported content. This guide helps you check that workflow on your own reading material. It does not promise that every fic works, that a long work will play uninterrupted, or that it will produce a downloadable audiobook.
What a fanfic audio reader should do
For a long chapter, keeping the prose in view helps you return to a line, check a character's name, or reread a passage. Use a short check before settling in:
- Check the opening. Open CastReader with its toolbar icon or the reading control in your installed version. Narration should begin in the story, not in tags, navigation, or recommendations.
- Follow the passage. Keep the reading tab visible. Check that the highlighted passage and scrolling follow the narration. Highlight precision can vary with the page and language; this is not a promise of word-by-word accuracy everywhere.
- Try the controls. Pause and resume within the chapter. If paragraph selection is available, select an earlier extracted paragraph and confirm that playback moves there. Stop if text is missing, repeated, or out of order.
Choose a voice and speed enabled for your account. Free installation does not mean every AI voice is free or anonymous. Check the installed picker and remaining allowance before a long session. Cloud AI reading sends the extracted text to the voice service.
These are desktop extension steps. For a phone, use the current download options and the instructions for that app or browser. A desktop result does not establish mobile compatibility, background playback, or a transfer of the current reading position.
Check the platform and reading view
AO3. Begin with a single accessible chapter. The extractor aims to read prose while leaving tags, author notes, and other surrounding content out. Read notes separately when they matter. Entire Work view can put several chapters on one page, but reading that loaded text is different from automatically following chapter links. Use the AO3 checklist to check notes, chapter boundaries, and workskins; the AO3 setup page has installation links.
Wattpad. Check the audio controls offered on your current story and the Wattpad Help Center first. Platform features can change; a blanket claim that Wattpad has no audio option is not a useful starting point. For CastReader, test one visible part, then stop, open the next part manually, wait for its text, and start again. Automatic next-part playback is not supported by this workflow. Use the Wattpad listening guide and setup page.
FanFiction.net and other sites. Start with the fanfiction setup page, then test the actual chapter. A result on AO3 does not validate FanFiction.net, Royal Road, Scribble Hub, or an author's personal site. Page layout, access, and the installed version affect extraction. An extension does not unlock restricted chapters or make image-only passages into readable text by itself.
The AO3 guide covers notes, workskins, and Entire Work. The Wattpad guide explains story audio options, desktop listening steps, and troubleshooting. This article adds no new live-platform test result.
The parts that matter for a long fic
Speed you can follow. Start at an available comfortable setting and adjust only while narration and the highlighted passage remain useful. Faster settings may require Pro. Chapter duration depends on the voice, punctuation, speed, and processing pauses; a word count alone is not a reliable completion-time promise.
A way to return. Keep the chapter URL and a non-sensitive location note. When you return, find the passage and use paragraph selection if it is available. Selecting a paragraph in the current page is different from automatic bookmarks or cross-device progress. Do not depend on either without checking the actual workflow.
A deliberate chapter change. Stop, open the next chapter, wait for its prose, and start again. This manual route also makes it easier to notice a missing or repeated section. Wattpad requires manual next-part reading; AO3 automatic continuation needs a separate check of the installed version and page.
For a problem report, note the browser and extension versions, reading view, voice, account tier, and the failed step. Do not include private account details or restricted story text. Use the Wattpad guide for symptom-based troubleshooting; the AO3 guide also includes a result template.
Where this sits next to podfic
Podfic is a person's recorded performance; text to speech generates narration. If a work has a podfic you enjoy, that remains a distinct way to experience it. This guide describes personal on-page reading, not a replacement for a performer's work.
Opening a work does not give permission to publish its text, screenshots, or generated audio. Check the author's terms before sharing a demonstration. CastReader is not an official AO3, Wattpad, or FanFiction.net product.
Keep going:
- AO3 text to speech, in detail — chapter prose, notes, and Entire Work checks.
- Does Wattpad have text to speech? — current story options and manual next-part reading.
- Listening to long web novels — planning a session one chapter at a time.
- Listen to fanfiction with CastReader — extension setup and available controls.
- Listen to AO3 and listen to Wattpad — platform-specific setup pages.
Start with a chapter you can access, and continue only after the short reading check succeeds.
